LATIS: Large Area Thin Infiltration System
Large Area Thin Infiltration Systems (LATIS) are a complete departure from standard practice. Conventional stormwater systems move water through pipes from large impervious areas into narrow but deep retention ponds. Conversely, LATIS keeps the water static, spread out, and shallow, in order to promote infiltration. This method retains and infiltrates only a few centimeters of rain water in the basecourse, and allows almost any rainstorm to completely draw down to the ground in less than 24 hours.
