While permeable brick pavers infiltrate stormwater through the gaps between bricks, it only takes an average of 6 months for these gaps to fill with weeds, so physical or chemical maintenance makes them difficult to maintain. Added to that, unless the base of your brick paver system is made of permeable concrete, they will move and rut soon after installation, which means that their beauty is only temporary.
Permeable concrete paving is like standard concrete, but it’s cleverly designed to have a 20% open-cell structure. It doesn’t contain sand, and it’s installed over a narrowly graded aggregate base. This base can store rainwater within its 40% void content, which allows it to slowly release water back into the ground. This innovative design allows groundwater to be replenished, and this permeable concrete paving design will also filter out harmful pollutants, which keeps them from entering local bodies of water where they could threaten wildlife.
